(Long instrumental introduction)

Well the baseball team in Queens spent the winter working on a new plan now
First they went out and got a new shortstop from the land of Japan now
And Mike Piazza is blasting those baseballs just as far as he can now
And we'll score runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
Runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away

Well the starting rotation has Glavine who once pitched like an ace now
He pitched like an ace now, he pitched like an ace
And then there's Steve Trachsel who pitches at a very slow pace now
Please pick up the pace now, please pick up the pace
And there's a hard throwing kid who goes by the name Tyler Yates now
The kids's name is Yates now, the kid's name is Yates
And we'll score runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
Runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away

Instrumental interlude

Well you knew all along that Mike Stanton really hasn't a clue now
He keeps getting' fried now, he keeps getting' fried
And at the age of 43 Johnny Franco should realize he's all through now
He keeps getting' fried now, he keeps getting' fried
And when Weathers takes the mound our opponents will be scoring a few now
He keeps getting' fried now, he keeps getting' fried
And we'll score runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
Runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
And we'll score runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
Runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away
Repeat and fade:
Runs runs runs 'til the bullpen gives the ballgames away

April 10, 2004: The New York Mets were next to last in the National League in runs scored in 2003. They scored 25 runs in their first three games in 2004, but managed to lose two of them, largely due to bullpen failures. My good friend Sylvia suggested this Beach Boys tune, and I ran with it.
