I can think of olden days
When rooting for my team
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
But lack of money puts a team in sorrow
(Sigh)
How can you mend a broken game?
How can you make traditions not break down?
How can you stop a Rupert Murdoch
From overpaying Brown
How can they share the revenue?
And give each team a chance to win
Please help me mend this broken game
And make it great again.
I can still feel the breeze
Rush through my memories
Of Mickey's swing or Sandy fan the side
Now major market teams are haughty
They think that sharing bucks is bad and naughty
(Sigh)
How can you mend a broken game?
How can you make traditions not break down?
How can you stop a Rupert Murdoch
From overpaying Brown
How can they share the revenue?
And give each team a chance to win
Please help me mend this broken game
And make it great again.
La-la-la-la. La-la-a-ah
La-la-la. La-la. La-la-la
Please help me mend this broken game
And make it great again.
(Slowly)
La-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
March 29, 1999: Before each season even begins, the fans of 16 to 20 of the 30 major league teams know that their team has no chance, because their team can't compete salary-wise with other teams. It doesn't look like things are going to change any time soon. In fact, there will probably be a lockout when the current collective bargaining agreement runs out after the 2001 season.
