They’re some of those guys who come to play in the Spring
Their documentation just don’t mean a thing
But they’re ready to play
They’ve just had more birthdays, yeah...
Some older guys keep running across the field
No matter how much they tried, the year that they were born was revealed
They handed in their papers, the ink wasn’t dry
It got them off the island, so they had to try
Some older guys keep running across the field
Some older guys keep running across the field
No matter how much they tried, the year that they were born was revealed
(8 bar musical interlude)
Some older guys keep running across the field
And should they tell the truth when they’re being scouted
They still might make the majors, but I can say I doubt it
And why
Look them straight in the eye, yeah...
Some older guys keep running across the field
No matter how much they tried, the year that they were born was revealed
They handed in their papers, the ink wasn’t dry
It got them off the island, so they had to try
Some older guys keep running across the field
Repeat and fade:
They’re some of those guys who come to play in the Spring
Their documentation just don’t mean a thing
But they’re ready to play
They’ve just had more birthdays, yeah...
February 22, 2002: As Spring Training 2002 began, several players, including Neifi Perez, Rey Ordonez, Octavio Dotel, Ramon Ortiz and Rafael Furcal, revealed that they were older than they had originally stated when they were scouted in their native lands. This truth-in-birthday business probably began in the Summer of 2001 with the revelations by Little League Pitcher Danny Almonte that he is really 14. The song was originally recorded by the Critters in the mid-1960's.
