Spring is when the players take the field
The faithful come to cheer
And watch them do their deeds
Winter is for signings and for trades,
We watch our team make deals
And hope they fill their needs
Fred Wilpon's Park is melting in the dark
All the blue and orange flowing down...
Someone left Alfonzo in the rain
I don't think that I can face him
You can second or third base him
And there's no one to replace him, anyway
Oh, no!
I recall the night in Houston town
When he went six for six
And hit three o'er the wall
And then the night he brought the D-Backs down
By hitting that grand slam
To propel the team that Fall.
Fred Wilpon's Park is melting in the dark
All the blue and orange flowing down...
Someone left Alfonzo in the rain
I don't think that I can face him
You can second or third base him
And there's no one to replace him, anyway
Oh, no!
(relatively brief instrumental interlude)
There will be another team for him
And he will play there
There will be another dream for him
He'll show the way there
I will raise my glass and drink a toast
Whene'er I see him playing in the game
But after all his years with the Mets
After all his years with the Mets
It won't be the same.
He will take his game to a new team and he will use it
He will make his plays for some new fans, and they'll good news it
May he find the things that he desires
And play the game until he's forty-five.
And after all his years with the Mets
After all his years with the Mets
I'll be thinking of him
And wondering why.
(extended up-tempo instrumental interlude)
Fred Wilpon's Park is melting in the dark
All the blue and orange flowing down...
Someone left Alfonzo in the rain
I don't think that I can face him
You can second or third base him
And there's no one to replace him, anyway
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
(major falsetto)
Oh NO!!
December 13, 2002: On December 7, 2002, the Mets failed to offer arbitration to Edgardo Alfonzo, ending a long relationship. He will be missed by Mets fans.
