The long and winding road
That led to a pact
Will never fix the game
I know that for a fact
Because the teams won't spend
The baseball lux'ry tax
They bargained through the night
Till the moon went away
Bud Selig and Don Fehr
Came out in the day
The problems still are here
And they won't go away
Steinbrenner will have to give
His cable bucks to KayCee
Glass will put them in the bank
Now doesn't that sound crazy
But still they made a deal
And they'll still play the game
The Expos will be moved
But everything's the same
And when this pact expires
There will be more shame
(8 bar instrumental interlude)
But still they made a deal
And they'll still play the game
The Expos will be moved
But everything's the same
And when this pact expires
There will be more shame
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
August 31, 2002: On August 30, 2002, the owners and the players union reached an agreement an averted a strike, just hours before the first game would have been cancelled. During the press conference that announced the agreement, Bud Selig compared the negotiations to the Beatles' song Long and Winding Road. This, of course gave me the inspiration for my song. Thanks, Bud. I knew you were good for something.
